Principle of color matching for electrophoretic paint

1. Search for color codes. Most car manufacturers attach relevant color information (i.e. original color number) to one or several specific parts of the vehicle body (i.e. color number plate) when launching their vehicles on the market, for users to search for when repairing.

2. Surface preparation. In daily work, the color standard version we use (such as the fuel tank cap and body parts) often has a lot of pollutants on the surface, which may affect the color comparison effect. Therefore, before color matching, it should be cleaned with fine gauze to avoid color differences with the body in the future.

3. Comparison of color cards. If the original color code cannot be found in step one, various color cards provided by the color masterbatch production company can be used to compare hue, brightness, and saturation, and select similar colors to obtain a relatively similar formula.

4. Query of formula. You can find the recipe by searching for the desired code in the index behind the color card. You can also input the color codes that are close to each other in the color card into the computer for query.

5. Measure and add color masterbatch. According to the identified color formula, use an electronic scale to measure and add relevant colorants and resins.

6. Compare the color palette. Compare the added and mixed paint with the standard color palette (in terms of hue, brightness, and saturation) using the following methods.

(1) Comparison method: directly compare the paint mixing stick with the car body

(2) Paint application method: Apply paint onto the body of the car and wait for it to dry before comparing

(3) Application method: Apply the paint evenly on the body of the car and compare it after drying

(4) Spray method: Spray paint onto the test panel and compare it after drying

1-3 is faster but less accurate, while 4 is slower but more accurate

If color differences are found in the comparison results, make minor adjustments. If the comparison results meet the requirements, the actual vehicle can be repaired.

7. Add color masterbatch for fine-tuning. According to the basic principle of color matching, add corresponding color masterbatches as needed to fine tune the existing colors.

Attention: Before making minor adjustments, it is necessary to fully understand and memorize the color masterbatch characteristic table. After adding the color masterbatch, compare it with the actual car. After the colors are consistent, carry out actual vehicle repair operations.
